I came across Luminous Media over at the AdLab blog. It’s definitely something your creatives and production departments should know about. Check out the demo in the video below:

WELCOME BACK, HENRIK!

Last month, a few of our chaps who work on the SATS account thought it would be a good idea to challenge them to a sumo contest. It wasn’t.

When the dust had settled, Morten (creative director) had slipped a disc and fractured his spine, Henrik (copywriter) had broken an ankle, and Michael (art director) had bust up his shoulder. Strangely, planner Daniel was the only one to avoid injury. I say strange because Morten, Henrik and Michael are big lads. They enjoy adventure racing, and occasionally climb mountains. Daniel is the human equivalent of a greyhound.

Anyway, we’re extremely pleased (and relieved) to announce that Morten is recovering well from his injury and should be back wrestling bears again in three months. And, it was really nice to welcome Henrik back to the office yesterday, complete with crutches and plaster cast. Here he is with some typically caring colleagues:

AN AD TO TELL YOU WE’RE NOT RUNNING ADS

Although it’s beautifully shot, and features some pretty amazing locations, there’s still something a bit odd about this movie channel ad heralding its decision to cut out the ads. It’s a tough one, but I wonder if they could have done it in a less ‘advertisy’ way. A 10 second spot with just black space, the words ‘Sky Movies’ appear, followed by ‘Now with no ads’. Any ideas?

DESK SPACE

I was wandering round the agency yesterday and came across this desk:

Some scruffy intern’s maybe? Our most eccentric art director’s? Or perhaps it belongs to some deranged copywriter who’s just been asked to implement a 47th round of text changes? No, this unsightly workspace is where none other than Herr Jonathan Lowth, International Account Director, lays down the law. . .

Though in his defence, apparently a messy desk is actually the sign of an ordered mind.

HARD-WON INSIGHT

Nick Coleman is a music critic. Music has always been the central thread of his life, helping him to ‘contain and examine emotion’. When he lost the hearing in one ear, his life changed irrevocably. He developed, and still has, unbearable tinnitus, leaving him unable to hear music in the nuanced way he was used to. He documents his experiences, heartbreaking and gripping in equal measure, in this fascinating article for The Guardian.

Here at Advance, we do a lot of work for ReSound, the Danish hearing aid manufacturer. This has given us a lot of insight into the lives of people with hearing diminishment, but Nick’s piece is so delicately written, and so heartfelt, that it gives us a truly unique glimpse into their world. I’ll be reading it often next time we start work on a campaign.

LET’S BE CLEAR WHAT WE MEAN

Thanks to the folks over at Living Brands for pointing me in the direction of this Mitchell and Webb clip. There’s a valuable lesson here about the importance of clarity. I’ve lost count of the number of briefings which could have been a LOT shorter if only people could express themselves more clearly.

That’s Danish for Happy Birthday, and today we had three very special ones to celebrate; a 30th and two 40ths.

Congrats to Annette (30):

And Martin (40):

With three such significant landmarks, champagne seemed appropriate:

Heads have been nodding in the creative department here at Advance Towers. Here is why, a beautifully executed ad for Thorntons. They make chocolates.

Some nice thinking here from Aussie agency Lowe to promote the Australian soccer league. My guess is that the league will need this kind of creativity in spades as most Aussie blokes I know view soccer with the kind of disdain they usually reserve for effete English chaps who steal their girlfriends.
