DAY TWO AT REBOOT10

Just a few thoughts on the hop because things happen kind of fast here and some of the talks are a lot more worthwhile than others . . . Anyway, the theme of Reboot10 is ‘free’ but underneath that, a more nebulous subject is bubbling along, which could perhaps be decribed as architectural connectivity. Or maybe it can’t. It’s not clear in my head really but a few speakers have touched on ‘connected environments’, devices other than computers that are connected to the internet, leveraging urban space to spread information etc. I’ll try and expand on this later.
I enjoyed Peter Rukavina’s talk on working for free but it was kind of let down by the fact that he only really does it on the side and earns a crust working for the man like the rest of us. Earlier I took part in one of the more informal sessions running in the smaller rooms where the topic was the nature of relationships in the Web2.0 world which, given more time, could have developed into something a bit more meaningful. One interesting take-out from that was the parallel between teenage offline communication/flirting and online: when things potentially get serious online you take it into IM; offline you go into your parents’ bedroom.
More later. Beer permitting.

LIVE FROM REBOOT!

A few of us are here at Reboot today. It’s exciting to see so many geeks in one room – feels like I’m home! I’ll be posting every now and then over the next few days. I think it’s actually compulsory to either be Twittering, blogging, filming or taking pictures. No-one is actually looking at the nice man on the stage anyway.

ADVANCE’S WINNING FORMULA

Advance is a member of the Danish Food Forum and a while back they asked us to design the prize for their annual Quality and Innovation Award, regarded as the food industry’s ‘Oscar’. Copywriter Henrik Svenningsen and AD Michael Svoldgaard came up with the concept of ‘Den Dybe Tallerken’, which translates roughly as ‘Reinventing the wheel’. Our lovely designer Trine Schat-Holm did the rest. The picture above shows Danish food minister Eva Kjaer Hansen presenting Trine’s award to a representative of Foss, this year’s winner. The picture below shows Trine giving it some welly on our Wii:

Annoying, young political idealists are probably a more common breed in the States than most European countries so I expect this ad wouldn’t play so well over here. But it’s pretty funny nonetheless:

KAROLINE AND THE STORY OF THE NICE AIRLINE

Every now and then, the marketing departments of big companies get it right. And when they do, it seems only fair that they should be recognised for it. After all, we’re all pretty quick to jump on their mistakes. So here’s a nice story about a graphic designer, his daughter and her experience with SAS (the airline, not the ultimate fighting force).
A while back, Advance graphic designer Peter Svenningsen was at Copenhagen Airport to wave goodbye to his 10-year-daughter Karoline who had been invited to spend a week at the Norwegian home of one of her best friends. And so it was that Karoline came to be sitting all alone on board an SAS flight bound for Stavanger. It seems she was well looked after because soon after her return to Copenhagen she penned this lovely poem which she sent to the airline’s head office (dad may have lent a hand with the design):

Here’s a more screen-friendly version of the poem:
Forårstur i skoven
Forårstur i skoven gør mig glad,
ligesom min gamle reol,
og den fine blomst,
tyder på en velkomst.
Jeg føler mig glad,
når jeg løber ind i et blad,
jeg føler mig godt tilpas,
når jeg flyver en tur med SAS
Skrevet af Karoline 3. c
Soon after, Karoline received a similarly poetic reply from the scribes at SAS:

Accompanying the letter was a 200DKK gift-card for FONA. And everyone lived happily ever after.

BRANDING YOURSELF

Here’s a lovely video a young designer made for a presentation he gave. He projected the video onto his t-shirt:
Big shot marketers like Hugh McLeod and Seth Godin write about this kind of thing all the time. It’s often described as ‘personal branding’. It’s not particularly new even. Way back in 1997 Fast Company wrote a seminal article called The Brand Called You, which sums it all up pretty succinctly. It’s pretty easy to dress it all up with buzzwords, but ultimately doesn’t it all come down to points of differentiation? I guess it doesn’t matter how you do it, but as long as you can find a way to stand out from the other guy, you’re onto a winner – projecting heartwarming videos onto your t-shirt is pretty ingenious though!
Thanks to Andy at Now in Colour for the link.

BIONICLE: ONE OF DANISH INDUSTRY’S BEST INITIATIVES

The influential Berlingske Nyhedsmagasin this week named Lego’s Bionicle range as one of Denmark’s top ten business ‘leadership decisions’ of the past ten years. This made us all very happy as Advance has played a key role in the development of the Bionicle brand since the very beginning. The agency news website bureaubiz also picked up on the story.

CLEANING UP

The Reverse Graffiti Project is a collaboration between the artist Paul ‘Moose’ Curtis and a natural cleaning products company called Green Works. Paul produces so-called ‘reverse graffiti’. In essence, he makes art by cleaning dirt from walls (watch the video and it’ll become clear). This is a great way for Green Works to get its brand better known. The video, showing Paul at work on a huge piece in a road tunnel in San Francisco, has already been picked up by PSFK. Here’s the video:

LEGO JOY

If you subscribe to any of the big design blogs you’ve probably already come across Jan Voorman’s ‘Dispatchwork‘ project. Lego is a big client of ours and so we love seeing the ingenious ways it’s used in pop culture (Lego Eddie Izzard springs to mind). But Jan’s work really stood out for us. The juxtaposition of the multi-coloured bricks and the monochrome of the ancient Italian walls is a bold architectural statement. But fancy words aside, it’s really just very beautiful and joyful to look at.
